The food scene

Malaysia is perhaps most famous for its scattering of  beaches and the islands of Redang, Perhentian, Langkawi and Rawa boast some of the most gorgeous seashores. The heritage is so strong that you will be sucked into the vortex of Malaysian culture. Flashes of colours, flavours and fragrances add an unmatched charm of their own and the cuisine here appeals to the raw and finer senses both. Mlaysian food is majorly spicy and chilli peppers are abundantly used in Malaysian cuisine. Malay delicacies include Nasi Dagang, Nasi Goreng, Curry Mee and Satay and have taken the world by storm, so much so that locally adapted versions of these dishes may be found in multiple countries!

Role in International Tourism and Travel:

The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 ranks Malaysia 25th out of 141 countries overall. In an effort to diversify the economy and make Malaysia’s economy less dependent on exports, the government pushed to increase tourism in Malaysia. As a result, tourism has become Malaysia’s third largest source of foreign exchange income, and accounted for 7% of Malaysia’s economy as of 2005.

In 1999, Malaysia launched a worldwide marketing campaign called “Malaysia, Truly Asia” which was largely successful and brought in over 7.4 million tourists and is still the tag line for Malaysia!

High Season:

Peak tourist season falls roughly from the beginning of December to the end of January, covering the major Northern Hemisphere winter holidays — Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Chinese New Year.

Best Season:

The best time to visit Malaysia is commonly between December to April. With spurts of rain here and there, the weather is hot and humid most of the time throughout the year. The tropical monsoon climate of Malaysia ensures short spells of rain even in the driest season, so make sure you carry an umbrella!

Success stories of women from Malaysia

Shao Lyn Low,

Co- Founder of Eats Shoots Roots

After being in the design industry for more than 15 years of her life, Shao Lyn Low was struck by the fact that she next to nothing regarding the cultivation of the very food she consumed passively. This led to her co-founding Eats Shoots Roots in 2012, a business that encourages people to grow their own food and be in touch with nature more. She empowers novices with the skills and information to build their own edible gardens and has built more than 51 edible gardens in addition to organizing more than 158 gardening workshops to impart the knowledge she has acquired. This young entrepreneur has sold more than 10,000 garden products in her successful attempt to teach people about their link with nature and the food they eat!
