Success stories of women from Maldives

Shaziya Saeed

The diving instructor & eco-warrior

Shaziya Saeed is a local celebrity. She spends her days training young girls to dive and enlightening locals and tourists on how to become more eco-friendly, keeping in mind how the people of Maldives seek to uphold sustainable tourism. She is an active member amongst three other women who spread consciousness about ocean health. To garner attention for their cause, last year they embarked on a 100km stand-up paddle boarding journey around Baa Atoll studying first hand the threats that the local environment and especially marine life was facing from excessive plastic pollution, leftover fishing gear and climate change in general. She hopped from island to island, running beach cleanups, hosting educational sessions at schools, and giving presentations regarding ocean health. To applaud her hard work, Saeed received the National Award in the field of diving in October.
